I met pinole photography in 1990. When I
first saw pinhole pictures I felt they were somewhat different from the
pictures I had seen : the contour is darker than the center, the subject
in motion is blurry and the image is a bit out of focus.
While I wanted to take myself pinhole pictures
being attracted by such pictures I happened to find a workshop and then
could start living with pinhole photography.
The interest in pinhole photography is getting
higher for these years in Japan. It seems to me that more and more people
find some meaning in taking pinhole pictures, a time and pains taking means,
despite in the days of convenient goods which surround us. That is to say,
we rediscover the fundamental principle that the photography is a light
drawing picture or we are attracted by the charm of original images beyond
our imagination which are different from our "instant" pictures
taken everyday by a lens camera.
The pictures shown here were taken in Paris
from 1993 to this spring. They ar landscapes of Paris which are "banal"
and too familiar to us through different media, but I will be happy if
you rediscover the charm and the particularity of pinhole photography called
the origin of photography in contrast with the pictures taken by a lens.
